Curatorial Commentary

MrHansel has been making work about the death of fiat money for years. Alas is the most direct version of that project: a deconstructed Dollar collage that takes the visual language of state currency and turns it back on itself. The title is the joke delivered straight. Poor fiat, we knew it well. The decision to make a limited edition giclee print of this work rather than exhibiting the original alone is a deliberate one. Twenty-one editions, archival pigment on cotton rag, framed with conservation glass. The print is the distribution mechanism. It is how the argument travels. Alas is designed to hang next to Memento Mori, skulls facing each other across the wall. The two works are in conversation. BMAG is presenting them together because that is how they were meant to be seen.
