Substrate (2025) compresses Rupture's practice into a single small panel: five horizontal strata, each worked in a different register of the artistâs mark-making, from smoked charcoal figures to bold gestural pattern to passages of fine botanical ink work, laid band over band like a cross-section of sediment. The title names what the painting shows: the layers a practice is built on. The smallest work in the exhibition, it functions as a core sample of everything hanging around it.
