Bitcoin Fixes This - Stack Sats - A.P.

´Bitcoin Fixes This´ is a series of eight ceramic sculptures, modern replicas of the very first ledgers ever invented. Each one represents one of the main problems in the FIAT system that Bitcoin solves. It is a series that bridges over 5000 years of the concept of money. Around 3300 BC, in ancient Mesopotamia, the first ledgers were invented. They were sealed clay envelopes, called bullae, that held tokens which represented contracts between two or more parties. The clay envelope made the contract tamper proof and verifiable only by breaking the ceramic envelope. These ledgers eventually led to accounting and the invention of written language. Each piece is a ceramic ball that holds ceramic orange pills inside - each a unique modern interpretation to these ledgers. Ancient bullae were sealed with the information of the contract minted on the outside of the clay ball. The outside of my modern interpretation is adorned with engravings that represent the monetary problem which bitcoin fixes, in a memetic humorous way. The Genesis block it minted on the outside, as well as an engraving of a snake, holding an orange pill. This is a nod to the story of The Garden of Eden in the Book of Genesis. The snake in this story is a symbol of temptation, knowledge, and, ultimately, disobedience. He tempts Eve to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. The snake in this interpretation hands the viewer an orange pill, a new fruit from the tree of knowledge. Its your choice to learn the truth. This time, eatting the forbidden truth brings you back to paradise. Each bullae is engraved with a known Bitcoin phrase or teaching that represents the issue addressed in that piece (HODL, rules no rulers, stack sats, dont trust verify etc), as well as the number of the piece and the saying - History started with an act disobedience - around the genesis snake. Unlike the ancient bullae, this modern one has holes, in the form of merkle trees, through which you can see the tokens inside - as is appropriate for a transparent ledger like Bitcoin. The tokens can't be tampered with, but can be seen. The piece comes with a hand made, iron stand that has been left to oxidize, bringing out a natural orange color. This bulla is the Artist Proof. The rest of the pieces will be made throughout this year and presented in conferences and private collections.

Curatorial Commentary

The ledger is one of the oldest human technologies. Before paper money, before banks, before states, there were clay tablets recording debts and transfers. Yonat Vaks took that history seriously. The Bitcoin Fixes This series reproduces the form of those first ledgers in ceramic stoneware and asks what it means that the ledger has returned, this time without a custodian. The Artist Proof sits outside the numbered edition. It is the version the artist kept. The iron stand is custom. The ceramic is fired stoneware. The object has weight in the hand the way the original tablets had weight in the hand. That continuity is not metaphor. It is the work. Vaks is one of the few artists in this space engaged with the deep history of money rather than its recent iconography. The ledger was always the point. Bitcoin made it legible again.
