Being a clown is a role. Being Pepeliaccio is a state. Buridanova puts the entire argument in a single sentence and then paints the painting that earns it: Pepe as Pagliacci, the figure whose public performance and private condition have collapsed into each other so completely that the distinction no longer applies. The format is deliberate. A 20 by 20 centimeter panel, oil on gesso-primed board. Intimate. Something you look at close. The scale enforces attention rather than spectacle, which is correct for a painting about what it means to maintain a face. Paired with The Laugher, these two small works are the most compressed and precise things Buridanova has made during her residency. They do not need size to make their claim.
