The 1st French NFTs - Les 1ers NFTs Français

In 2017 and again in 2022, seven Rare Pepe cards were created depicting candidates for the French presidential election. Nicolas Sierro made a leporello — a folding book, the format of dispatches and field notes — to hold all seven together. The work is a time capsule of two political moments, rendered in the visual language of a decentralized card trading platform built on the Bitcoin blockchain. The Rare Pepe directory ran from 2016 to 2018. It was the first serious experiment in provably scarce digital art, years before the term NFT existed. The cards in this leporello are from that original directory, series-verified, on Counterparty. The physical object connects that history to a tangible artifact you can hold and unfold. BMAG presents this as part of the Bitcoin Vegas 26 collection because it belongs to both the art history of Bitcoin and the political history of the internet. Those two things are not as separate as they used to be.
