The Connoisseur opens a new series. Buridanova is bringing cryptopunk aesthetics into contact with the tradition of the portrait commission: the kind of painting made for someone who wanted to establish, through oil and canvas, exactly what kind of person they were. The figure is anonymous but not generic. Old noble house, medical practice, eye for rare objects. The mirrored helmet purchased from a traveler from the future is the precise detail that sets the series apart from historical pastiche. The painting knows exactly what century it is in. It just refuses to be confined to it. This is the first work in a body of paintings Buridanova is developing during her residency at BMAG. More will follow. The Connoisseur establishes the terms.
