Mysteria Memetica opens with a figure whose chest is on fire. Not metaphorically. The flame is a light source, casting the surrounding cast in its glow: Kekius Maximus in a laurel wreath, a hooded bird-headed psychopomp, Saint Christopher Cynocephalus, and at the base of the composition the kykeon, the sacred drink of the Eleusinian Mysteries. This is a painting about initiation and what it costs to be let in. Ksenia Buridanova's argument is that the meme is a mystery cult. The initiated know. The uninitiated scroll past. The hierophant at the center is the node through which the transmission flows, and ecstasy, as in the original Eleusinian rites, requires witnesses. The community is the ritual. Mysteria Memetica was the centerpiece of BMAG's inaugural auction, which closed at 21,000,000 sats across 79 bids from 9 bidders. The original oil painting is held by its collector. This print edition was made to extend the work's reach to a broader group of collectors without compromising what makes it significant. The edition size of 21 is not a round number. It is a reference, and collectors who need it explained are perhaps not yet initiated. The print is produced on archival Hahnemühle paper, hand-signed and numbered by Buridanova, and includes a certificate of authenticity.
