The Surgeon in Red (from MCOtS)

The Surgeon in Red (from MCOtS) places Pepe in the role of Jan van Hemessen's 16th-century quack — the original figure a satire of charlatans who claimed to extract "stones of folly" from the skulls of the gullible. Pepe inherits the job perfectly: cutting into the cultural mind, replacing one idea with another, all while grinning through the whole procedure.

Curatorial Commentary

Van Hemessen's Village Surgeon is a 16th century painting of a quack doctor extracting the "stone of folly" from a patient's head. Pepenardo replaces the surgeon with Pepe and pulls the figure into the MCOtS composition. This drawing returns to that source directly. Pepe in the wide-brimmed hat, the ruffled collar, the knowing expression. The inscription names it. The rest is left to the viewer.
